A Day in the Life of a Yorkshire Wedding Photographer
Ever wondered what it’s like behind the camera on a wedding day? While the photos may look effortless, there’s a whole lot of thought, preparation, and passion that goes into capturing every single moment. I’m Darren, a full-time Yorkshire wedding photographer based in Hull, and I thought I’d give you a little glimpse into what my typical wedding day looks like – from early morning prep to dancing under fairy lights.
The Calm Before the (Beautiful) Chaos
My day usually starts early – very early. I like to arrive in the area with plenty of time to spare, especially if it’s a venue I’ve not worked at before. I’ll grab a coffee, double-check my gear (and backups – always backups!), and take a few quiet moments to walk around the venue, looking for the best light, interesting backdrops, and where the key moments will unfold.
By mid-morning, I’m with the bridal party, capturing all the excitement of the getting ready process. The laughter, the nerves, the popping of prosecco – this is where the day’s story really begins. I like to blend into the background and let everything unfold naturally, but I’m always on hand to fix a buttonhole, find a missing earring, or reassure a nervous bridesmaid.
Saying “I Do” (and the Moments You Don’t See)

Next up is the ceremony – the heart of the day. Whether it’s Ripon Cathedral, The Barn at Willerby Hill, Allerton Castle, or a registry office in the city, as your Yorkshire wedding photographer I take great care in capturing not just the big moments (the vows, the first kiss), but also the little ones – a proud tear from Dad, a cheeky smile from the flower girl, a reassuring squeeze of the hand.
After the ceremony, it’s time for confetti, hugs, and group shots – and I do my best to make this part as relaxed and efficient as possible so you can get back to enjoying your day. I’m also constantly scanning for those candid moments – the ones you might miss at the time, but treasure forever in your photos.
Portraits with Personality
Couple portraits are one of my favourite parts of the day. It’s a chance for you to catch your breath, be yourselves, and have a few minutes together while I work a little magic with light and location. I always keep it relaxed and natural – no stiff poses, just genuine connection. Whether it’s a windswept field in the Wolds or a hidden garden at your venue, I’ll find a setting that feels you.

Into the Evening
Once you’re seated for the meal, I take a well-earned break (alongside your guests), but I’m never far away. Speeches are next – and I love them. So many emotions packed into one part of the day – laughter, tears, and everything in between. I’m constantly on the move, capturing reactions, little details, and the atmosphere in the room.
As the sun begins to dip, I’ll often suggest a few golden hour photos – the light is just perfect for something a bit dreamy and romantic. Then it’s time for the evening fun to begin. First dance, cake cutting, wild shapes on the dance floor – I’ll be there, camera in hand, capturing every beat of it.
Wrapping Up
After I’ve packed up my gear and said my goodbyes, the work isn’t quite over. When I get home (often around midnight), I back up your entire day’s images in at least two places. Only then can I rest, knowing your memories are safe and sound.
Why I Love It
For me as a Yorkshire wedding photographer, every wedding day is different, and that’s what makes this job so rewarding. You’re not just hiring someone to take pictures – you’re inviting someone into one of the most important days of your life. I take that responsibility seriously, and I genuinely care about telling your story the right way.
So, if you’re getting married in Yorkshire and looking for someone who’ll laugh with you, cry (quietly) behind the lens, and capture it all with heart – I’d love to be there. Let’s tell your story, one frame at a time.
